The Employees’ State Insurance (ESI) scheme is a social security and health insurance program for Indian workers. Managed by the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC), it provides medical, monetary, and other benefits to employees. The scheme is applicable to non-seasonal factories and establishments with 10 or more employees (20 in some states) earning a maximum monthly wage of ₹21,000 (₹25,000 for persons with disabilities) .

- Medical Benefits: Comprehensive medical care for employees and their families from the first day of employment, with no ceiling on expenditure.
- Sickness Benefits: Cash compensation at 70% of wages during certified sickness for up to 91 days per year. Extended sickness benefits for long-term diseases at 80% of wages.
- Maternity Benefits: Full wage payment for 26 weeks of maternity leave, extendable by one month on medical advice.
- Disablement Benefits:
- Temporary: 90% of wages during the period of temporary disablement.
- Permanent: Monthly payments at 90% of wages based on the extent of disability.
- Dependants’ Benefits: Monthly payments at 90% of wages to dependents in case of death due to employment injury.
- Other Benefits: Funeral expenses, vocational rehabilitation, and confinement expenses .
Documents Required
- Registration Certificate: Under the Factories Act or Shops and Establishment Act.
- Certificate of Incorporation: Memorandum of Association and Articles of Association for companies, or Partnership Deed for partnerships.
- Details of Employees: Including their salary details and date of joining.
- Bank Details: For the contribution payments.
Post-Registration Information/Benefits
- Contribution Payments: Employers contribute 3.25% of the total monthly wages, while employees contribute 0.75% .
- Access to Benefits: Employees and their families can access medical care and other benefits immediately after registration.
- Compliance: Regular filing of ESI returns and maintaining records of contributions and benefits availed.
- Support and Training: ESIC provides support and training for employers to ensure compliance and efficient management of the scheme.
