GST is a comprehensive indirect tax levied on the supply of goods and services in India.
It was introduced to replace multiple indirect taxes like VAT, service tax, and excise duty, creating a unified tax system.
GST is a destination-based tax, meaning it is collected at the point of consumption.
Benefits:
- Simplified Tax Structure: Replaces multiple indirect taxes with a single tax, reducing complexity.
- Input Tax Credit (ITC): Businesses can claim credit for the GST paid on purchases, reducing the overall tax burden.
- Increased Compliance: Encourages businesses to maintain proper records and comply with tax regulations.
- Boost to Economy: Promotes a more transparent and efficient tax system, potentially boosting economic growth.
- Elimination of Cascading Effect: Prevents the tax-on-tax effect, reducing the overall cost of goods and services.
